There was a time when you couldn't record shows. Do you remember that? The idea of it was so threatening to television that it was brought before the Supreme Court. TV  thought if you recorded their shows, you were infringing on their copy-write. Sony won the court battle, but ended up losing the tape war to JVC's VCR tape, but how did they lose?There is still a Beta-max machine in my parents garage right now, and the first years of David Letterman can be found in a file cabinet in that same garage. My brother is engineer for CNN. He was in-tune to the technology of video from the start, so when the time came to buy a machine, be bought a Beta-Max, because the tape and picture quality was far better, but the tapes could only record an hour, while the VCR tape could hold 2 hours. This was just one of the reason America, and the world, chose the inferior product. The Engineer guy explains the rest.
