Those folks in the Netherlands, they have a bizarrely sharp pop acumen, it's almost insidious. Don't bore us, get to the chorus.  And, in the late eighties, none were sharper than the toothy, spikey haired duo of Roxette.

U.S. radio can be a very hard nut to crack, especially if you're a band from way across the ocean, like Roxette. This album came out in 1988, and the singles didn't start charting until almost a year later. Which is crazy, cos the hooks and production on thier tunes absolutely hit your brain like a tacklebox made of candy. According to the Wiki entry, it took an American exchange student named Dean Cushman, coming home from Sweden urging radio station KDWB in Minneapolis, to play "The Look", for the song to eventually take off. Take off all the way to number one.  Because radio programmers, they are a timid breed. Because...radio.

Which leads us to their follow up smash, also a big hit, now something of a standard, having appeared in Pretty Woman and having a cover version, danced up and pumping, hit the charts in the mid-2000s.

Get your cellphones lit and waving. It's power ballad time.
