Raining outside now. I think it was raining outside when I first heard today's song back in 1988. Alone in a radio station. The best place on earth.  I, new to radio, was a part timer. Charged with the awful task of babysitting a pre-recorded program. On vinyl. Yes, this was a long time ago. The countdown was something called The Rick Dees Weekly Top Forty. Just awful. I hated Rick Dees. I loathed his stupid smiling blow dryed face on the cover of the record package. I guess that's why I had such a hard time playing the countdown in the right order. Why was this putz Rick Dees so successful? He so seemed like some out of touch dad, counting down songs you just knew he didn't give a toss about. And this was the Disco Duck guy? He had a career? Meh. I think the shift in question was the one where the record player started going wonky in the middle of the Pet Shop Boy song, and I called the engineer for help. He told me to reach under the turntable and adjust the green and red- NO WAIT  DON'T!

And the turntable went poof in a sudden cloud of smoke that engulfed my face like a fart belching out of a chimney stack.

"Are you okay?" the voice on the phone asked.

"Yeah," I coughed. And we had actually somehow fixed the turntable. I cleared the soot from my eyebrows as The Pet Shop Boys proceeded to wonder what they had done to deserve this and I hacked up turntable explosion and Rick Dees continued to grin, smugly. Oh, how I hate him.
