Oh, Billy Joel fans, the hardcore ones, oh how they loathe this album, it so represents the end of the golden age of Billy Joel, the fading out of the Billy they love (sigh). And the introduction of the Billy Joel that inspired this:

I remember cries of "what the hell is this?" and "why is Linda Ronstadt on the cover?" Tell you what though, I'll take the ire of Billy fans, cos I really dig this album. Billy was simply paying tribute to the music that had inspired him as a kid, the doo wop, the Motown, and he replicated that stuff amazingly well. Sure Billy Joel was still king of the tortured rhyme, but the sheer joy that comes through in the tunes collected here is super impressive and way catchy. Like, for instance, "The Longest Time." Every voice on here is Billy, multi-tracked all the way to doo-wop heaven. Unironically, I really like it.
