CHIC Birthed the Bassline That Anchored a Generation

Man, talk about a landmark song. Talk about a ground breaker. Talk about musicians carving out a distinct sound and meet the masses head on. Nile Rogers. Bernard Edwards. Slamming Tony Thompson on the drums. Today's it's Chic. Dig.

Summer '79 and this song was everywhere. It was the pulse of whatever was going on. Just as in the song, if you was roller skating down at the Skateworld, it was to this. Weird, us redneck and army brat kids grooving to a song loaded with lyrics about a lifestyle we could not comprehend or achieve. Clams on the half shell? The sporting life? What? And that groove, ground zero for rap's first break through, "Rapper's Delight."  Also Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust." Very cool. That bass line gave birth to and anchored a generation. Solid.

And what was the sneaky bit behind the lyrics? According to the song's Wiki entry, Nile Rodgers has stated that he used lyrics from depression-era songs as a hidden way to comment on the then-current economic depression in the United States. Ah, levels. The mark of a great song.
