Dig that freaking bass line!

My wife, understanding, top forty soul that she is, calls it "loser rock". Some call it "math rock." Commonly known as progressive rock, this was a movement starting in the late sixties of rock guys attempting to merge the rock band format, guitar, bass, drums, occasional keyboard, with that of classical music. From this you got bands like Genesis, Emerson Lake and Palmer, 18 minute musical suites and a load of tuneless noodling, full pretentious on rock band wankery and Peter Gabriel dressed as a flower playing the pan flute.

Masters of this form, minus the wack a doo costuming, were our band under the microscope today, Yes.

Sure they could disappear up their own musical howdy holes with the best of them, just check out a thing they put out called "Tales From Topographical Oceans", with twenty minutes songs, miles of organ and guitar frippery and spaced out vocals from John Anderson, known to me as "Zontar,The Space Elf." Before that, however, Yes broke in the U.S. with an actual top twenty hit, climbing to #13 in 1971 with a severely edited version of today's-
