Having written hits for Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, The Jacksons, not to mention "Backstabbers" for The O'Jays, Gene McFadden and John Whitehead, a team since they were teenagers and discovered by Otis Redding, were eager to branch out on their own as artists.

However, Philadelphia International Records owners Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, were holding the guys back, preferring them to be just house songwriters, choosing to keep them off the public stage. Even today's song might have gone to the O'Jays if the bosses had their way. And that situation gave birth to this song's lyrics.
