Get a hanky. You may cry at this one. The comedian Dana Carvey, in describing what being famous on Saturday Night Live was like, said something along the lines of, "If you see a frog on the street, you just say, oh, there's a frog, and you forget about it. But, if you take that same frog, and put him on television, people will say, 'Hey, there's that frog that's on the t.v.' and they will become obsessed with it, even though, basically, it still just the same damn frog."

I saw it last Saturday. Then, again Sunday. Then, my son, seven, noticed it a couple of days ago. There, on the side of a very busy residential road, is this medium-sized Sonic cup, placed atop a fire hydrant. At first, no big deal, some bored person just placed it there, forgot about it, moved on. However, after nearly five days of this cup not going anywhere, I feel it is time to share this with the world.

It's the Medium Sized Sonic Cup That Could.

I mean, what are the odds that this little cup, this brave traveler, could surmount the vicissitudes and travails an object this frail, this vulnerable would be subject to, and yet remain atop that fire hydrant? Neither bird, nor squirrel nor random passerby has been tempted? It took every once of restraint for my son not to leap out of our car to knock this Styrofoam warrior from his not very lofty at all perch. And, as for us adults, truthfully, who among us hasn't transcribed a weird loop-de-loo pattern across a Wal Mart parking lot just to crush a stray soda with our Ford Escort?

What does it say about this plucky medium sized cup that it yet remains where it is, after five days, and that it's not smashed into sad defeated mush in the gutter across the street? I mean, EVEN THE STRAW IS STILL IN IT!

Truly, the cup does stand alone.

On the television show Community, Jeff Winger once lamented the human ability to anthropomorphize any object by naming a pencil Steve and then snapping it in his audience's face.

If this cup goes down, I'm think I'm gonna be real #@!@ sad.
