COPPERAS COVE — Against the No. 11 team in the state, Copperas Cove could not afford any mistakes. Unfortunately for the Bulldawgs  (4-2, 2-1 Distric 8-5A), they were far from perfect.

Copperas Cove was plagued by dropped passes, missed a pair of field goals and a pair of extra points, turned the ball over three times, including once in the red zone, and had a touchdown run negated because of a holding penalty. The miscues were too numerous and too costly to overcome and the Midway Panthers ( 6-0, 3-0) claimed sole possession of first place in District 8-5A with a 42-32 victory at Bulldawg Stadium.

“I can single out several things, but the bottom line is that we made some mistakes, but (Midway) was also able to move the football,” Copperas Cove head coach Jack Welch said. “If we would have made those same mistakes, but they couldn’t move the football, (the mistakes) never would have been singled out.

“We made more mistakes than them, and that was the difference in the ballgame.”
