Texas quarterback David Ash injured his hamstring during a summer workout Friday and is listed as day-to-day right now, Orangebloods.com first reported, citing three sources close to the program.

Many predict Ash will be named the Longhorns’ starter ahead of Case McCoy, but at Big 12 Media Day coach Mack Brown left the battle open. While being sidelined with a strain hamstring in July is not a major setback, any time off could open the door that much more for McCoy, the younger brother of former UT standout, Colt McCoy.

Texas begins fall camp in a week.

Last season Ash completed 56.9 percent of his passes, but threw eight interceptions and just four touchdowns. Case McCoy’s was better statistically, with seven touchdowns, four interceptions and a 61.1 percent completion percentage. But, in the spring, it was Ash who seemed to pull away in the competition.

Brown sounds as though he’d hold off on naming a starter until the start of the season, presumably to keep pressure on both players in the preseason.
