I'll say it. I think Creedence Clearwater Revival were the American Beatles. Scoff if you will. Pound for pound, hit for hit, CCR stand toe to toe with the guys from Liverpool.  John Fogerty, rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty, bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug Clifford, a group of normal Joes from El Cerrito, California, John singing like he was paddling a leaky boat through a southern swamp. They sold 26 million albums.  In five years they released seven albums and they are packed end to end with hits and deep cuts that still dominate current Classic Rock radio of all stripes.

In 1970, they released today's song. Many thought it was about the Vietnam war, but in actuality, it was about gun proliferation.  Fogerty, in a 1993 interview with the Los Angeles Times, said,

"I think a lot of people thought that because of the times, but I was talking about America and the proliferation of guns, registered and otherwise. I'm a hunter and I'm not antigun, but I just thought that people were so gun-happy -- and there were so many guns uncontrolled that it really was dangerous, and it's even worse now. It's interesting that it has taken 20-odd years to get a movement on that position."
