One of the most shocking moments in the new Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailer, apart from the whole evil Rey thing, was the shot of C-3PO — lovable, sweet, innocent C-3PO — with glowing red eyes. In the world of Star Wars, this is never a good sign. It’s not like C-3PO needs some Visine or something. He’s gone full Dark Side! But why?

The new video by ScreenCrush’s Ryan Arey puts forward a pretty interesting theory about this shot. A lot of people have speculated this is actually the evil robot Triple Zero, who has previously appear in Star Wars comics, in disguise. But Ryan thinks an overlooked moment in the original Star Wars films may give the explanation for Evil Threepio. Watch:
