Whether I love or hate the finished product, I respect the fact that this new Watchmen series, based (ish?) on the classic graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, is not doing the same old thing. This is not a direct adaptation of the book. It’s not a mini-series version of the film, which was directed by Zack Snyder. It is assuredly something new. You’ll see some of the heroes from the original book (like Jeremy Irons as Ozymandias) and allusions to others (like all the guys in the Rorschach masks). But the show is not the Watchmen we all know and love.

Here’s the show’s official synopsis:

Set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws, this drama series from executive producer Damon Lindelof embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name while attempting to break new ground of its own. The cast includes: Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Hong Chau, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, and James Wolk.

This Watchmen comes from Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof, another intriguing element of this production that already includes an awesome cast, and some A+ source material. Though HBO has announced no specific date yet, the new Watchmen will debut sometime this fall.
