AUSTIN, Texas — Class 2A and 3A schools in Texas are set to add a fourth playoff team from each district in football and other sports next year, and the state's largest classification is likely to be renamed Class 6A in two years.

The University Interscholastic League said Monday the latest playoff expansion will start with the 2013-14 school year if approved by the Texas education commissioner. The change would mean that four teams will make the playoffs from each district in the top four classifications.

The current Class 5A, the state's largest, would become Class 6A after the 2014 realignment. The current Class 1A Division II would become Class 1A, and 1A Division I would become Class 2A.

A third classification for team tennis and soccer would be added starting in 2014-15.
