UMHB Football Tops Texas Lutheran 47–14

SEGUIN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team overcame a sluggish start with a big second quarter as the Cru rolled to a 47-14 victory over Texas Lutheran Saturday in Seguin. UMHB improves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the win. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the ASC on the season.

The Cru only managed a 31-yard Nicholas Medina field goal in the first quarter for a 3-0 lead after the opening period of play. UMHB would get the aerial attack going in the second quarter to stretch it out. Jase Hammack hit Jonel Reed with an eight-yard touchdown pass one play after a long K.J. Miller punt return. Hammack hooked up with Reed for a 77-yard catch and run on the next possession to push the lead to 16-0. Hammack would added touchdown tosses of six and 19 yards to T.J. Josey as the Cru opened up a 30-0 lead at halftime.

Texas Lutheran scored first in the second half on Austin Mathews’ seven-yard run to cut the lead to 30-7, but the Cru answered with Marquis Duncan’s one-yard scoring run. Medina added a 33-yard field goal to stretch it to 40-7 UMHB with 8:35 remaining. Kyle Grona hit Pearce Loth with a nine-yard scoring pass with 4:43 to go to close the gap to 40-14, but Hammack found Logan Collins for a 24-yard touchdown with 14 seconds to go to extend it to the final margin.

Hammack tied a school record with five touchdown passes in the victory and his 378 passing yards are the second-highest single-game total in Cru history. Reed caught five passes for a career-high 176 yards and two TD’s. Duncan led the UMHB ground game with 70 yards and a score on eight carries. Raylon Hickey led the Cru defense with a career-high 14 tackles and Jalen Martin added 12 more.

Grona was 22-40 passing for 193 yards and a touchdown. Loth caught six passes for 77 yards and a score for the Bulldogs. DaKwa Davis led the TLU defense with 10 tackles.

UMHB outgained the Bulldogs 509 to 284. The Cru threw for 378 yards and added 131 on the ground. TLU was limited to 84 rushing yards. UMHB turned the ball over twice and committed seven penalties for 74 yards in the contest.

The Cru will now return home for the 2018 home opener next Saturday. UMHB will welcome Southwestern University to Crusader Stadium for a 6 pm kickoff. That game will also mark the return of Cru Head Coach Pete Fredenburg from his school mandated three-game suspension.
