What a week to kick off some major road work in Killeen! Temps are near 100, and the heat index is even higher as crews got started on three important projects in the city.

According to a press release from Ken Roberts with the Texas Department of Transportation (Waco District), the first project is to construct underpass turnarounds at the intersection of Fort Hood Street and Stan Schlueter Loop in Killeen. Crews will be repairing pavement and apply new asphalt to Fort Hood Street and FM 3470, south, to the Bell Williamson County line. The project will continue with northbound and southbound turnarounds at the Fort Hood Street/ FM 3470 intersection.

The pavement work will continue from the end of August into early December as crews repair and overlay some 13 miles of 195 (Fort Hood Street) down to the Bell County line. This work will be regular and occur between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. during the week. There will be no weekend work.

In case your curious what a project like this costs? Well, TxDOT says the project has been awarded to Texas Materials Group, Inc., of Cedar Park for about 8.4 million dollars. As long as the weather cooperates the project should conclude sometime this winter.

If you travel through these areas regularly you will want to make sure you keep an eye out for flaggers, lane closures, and delays through the work zones and always obey the posted speed limits in these areas.
