I'm currently at odds with our music library. I feel that we should play every song from the 70s & 80s, while the music computer believes that less is more. Since I don't get paid to pick the songs my opinion means as much as financial advice from a 5 year old.

But that doesn't mean, like the 5 year old, I can't voice my thoughts. Or, in this case, write my thoughts. So, in the mindset of "End of the Year Lists", here are my end of the year choices for new music on K1017.

  • Alan Parsons

    Anything by this project please

I loved the Alan Parsons Project. The album of Edger Allen Poe songs was such a great mind trick. I would just lay on the bed with that LP running through the headphones, and by the time it was finished, I would be exhausted. In a good, clean way. I also enjoyed this number from them.

  • Total Eclipse of the Heart

    The other Bonnie Tyler song

I take so much heat at the station for loving this song. I thought it was amazing before I read that it was originally meant for Meatloaf to sing. I can see it, and I can hear it from Meatloaf. But I don't think it would've been as good as Bonnie's version.

  • Speaking of Meatloaf

You Took the Words Right Out of my Mouth

I remember watching MTV as a kid and seeing this video for the first time. Here was a fat guy on MTV. I didn't think it was possible, but Meatloaf kills it every time. It was the first time I witnessed "Talent" winning over "Packaging". I also loved the word play of the song.

  • The Streak

    Ray Stevens Baby

"Don't Look Ethel!" became a saying thanks to this classic. One of the best "novelty" songs of all time. It should be heard more often.

  • I Think we're Alone Now

    Really? Tiffany?

Yes, Tiffany. This is a perfect example of pure pop. When I first heard this I didn't like it. I don't like remakes as a rule, but I was delivering a new car to a client in the Twin Cities. I was still in High School at the time, driving a brand new car in a major metropolitan area when this song came on the radio. On every radio station. I couldn't "not" hear it. And, after a few traffic jams, I couldn't get it out of my head. Then I found out the girl is my age, and a redhead. I was hooked.

  • Saturday Night

    Bay City Rollers

Another example of pure pop. It's got clapping and spelling. I deify you not to sing-a-long.

  • Puttin' on the Ritz

    Taco

I like the odd song, and it doesn't get much more odd that this. But really, it's a catchy tune. Plus, it's got a tap dance breakdown in the middle. Also, the guy's name is Taco. Who doesn't like taco's?
