Texas is a common setting in fiction, especially westerns and romances. It's not often, however, Texas is portrayed as the setting for geopolitical intrigue.

In stores today is a new thriller from author and former Navy pilot Stephen Coonts who has sixteen prior New York Times bestsellers to his credit, beginning with his first book, Flight of The Intruder. That novel was made into a film by director John Milius (Red Dawn) and starred Danny Glover.

Coonts newest book is Liberty's Last Stand and it features the exploits of Jake Grafton, the main character from ten other novels including Flight of the Intruder. It also features Tommy Carmellini, the lead character of another, separate series of Coonts's books who has been teamed with Grafton in the past few installments.

The publisher's description of the book previews the action:

"The president of the United States stands on an outdoor stage, flanked by powerful members of his administration and party. Television crews are preparing for broadcast. High above the stage, on a nearby rooftop, a decorated sniper adjusts the scope on his rifle.

"Afterwards, America will never be the same.

"Jake Grafton and Tommy Carmellini suddenly find themselves on the wrong side of the law when a public act of violence throws the country into chaos just before a presidential election. After martial law is declared and rioting begins, Grafton and Carmellini must risk everything to unravel a massive conspiracy and help a new resistance movement rise up against an unimaginable enemy…"

Now that's a fiction book I would read! Without giving away too much of the plot and rousing the ire of the publisher, as the story goes on Texas secedes from the Union. I cannot imagine.

Speaking of the publisher, this is one of the comparatively few works of fiction from Regnery Publishing, a publishing house known for conservative political tomes. The latest book from presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump is a Regnery book. They've also published the last few Peanuts books from Charles M. Schulz, so they're nothing if not adventurous in their variety of choices.

If you're curious about Liberty's Last Stand, a preview has been published online.
