Texas Couple Dies in Fiji While on Vacation

They called it a "Dream Vacation". Now it's a nightmare for their family.

KHOU 11 is reporting on the WFAA story of the Fort Worth couple who took a dream vacation to Fiji and won't be coming back.

The couple was David and Michelle Paul. David was an Air Force veteran. He and his wife were raising two kids and dog. They left them at home with relatives so they could have a "me" time together halfway around the world.

Tracey Calanog, sister-in-law to the couple through her husband, who is Michelle Paul's brother, said, "They were planning an amazing vacation."

She said the day before they were scheduled to head home the family received a phone call from the couple. Said Calanog, "They knew something was going on in their body and were able to get to the hospital."

The cause of death is still under investigation, but it killed really quick. Michelle went first, then David passed before he could be airlifted to Australia for treatment.

The U.S. Embassy in Fiji could not comment on the deaths specifically. They did say that the government had been warning of a "dangerous" flu season that was hitting the region.

No one believes the flu can be deadly until someone they know dies from it. A dream vacation should never turn into such a horrific nightmare. If your dream destination is suffering from a killer virus outbreak, stay home where you've already built up a tolerance to death.
