One Central Texas school is choosing to speak openly to students about the current state of affairs in our country.

According to a report from our news partners at KWTX, Temple ISD Superintendent, Dr. Bobby Ott is supporting student's curiosity to learn more about the siege on the Capitol that took place on January 6.

It was a moment that will for sure go down in history. CNN reports that 5 people died as a result of the attempted coup to keep 45th President, Donald Trump in power. As an adult I can barely wrap my head around the events of January 6, and I'm sure the younger generation is even more confused.

Dr. Ott explained that a student he mentors had questions about the events that took place at the capitol. Dr. Ott has also received numerous emails from students asking about the protest.

Without choosing sides, Dr. Ott is encouraging teachers to take the time to answer questions from the students about the coup.

“They need to understand that’s an anomaly and that’s not really what the future needs to look like, and they’re going to be part of taking us there,” Ott said.

I wholeheartedly agree with the discussions because we definitely do not want to sweep this kind of thing under the rug.

“We really take the position of being respectful to one another and compassionate, and listening to our students,” Ott said.

“If we ignore our students, put our head in the sand, what are we teaching them?”
