Temple Cancels 4th of July Drive-In Fireworks Show

Yikes.

The City of Temple has cancelled the drive-in fireworks show that had been scheduled for Saturday at Crossroads Park.

A brief statement issued Thursday evening reads:

The City of Temple has canceled Saturday's H-E-B All American Drive-In Fireworks Show.

In response to Texas Governor Abbott's updated executive order this afternoon that limits gatherings to no more than 10 people, Mayor Tim Davis decided it is in the best interest of public healthy and safety to cancel the fireworks show.

The City will work to reschedule the fireworks display to another event in the future. We look forward to celebrating with residents once it is safe to do so.

While I'm all for taking precautions to help slow the spread of COVID-19, I'm genuinely surprised at this decision. It seemed to me that a drive-in show was a decent compromise. I can only assume the folks at City Hall were worried that people would get out of their cars to tailgate and mingle.

If 2020 were a tangible object, it would be a flaming dumpster full of medical waste and screaming rubber chickens. That's all I have to say.

As of this article's publication, the Belton rodeo, the concerts and fireworks show at Schoepf's, and the Ft. Hood fireworks show had not been cancelled. We'll see if that changes.
