UPDATE: Police in Killeen continue to investigate this morning's shooting incident, but the department announced late Thursday afternoon that they were calling off their search for suspect Nathan Erick Nance.

KPD spokesman Jeff Donahue said the following in a public briefing:

The Department of Public Safety offered their full support and provided aerial support via a helicopter along with ground assets. Several units of our own department including the K-9 officers, Tactical Response Unit and the Criminal Investigation Division assisted in the perimeter and search for Nance.

After an exhaustive search for Nance occurred without locating him, it was called off while the criminal investigation continued. Updates on this case will be made when available.

No persons were injured during this ordeal.

At a press briefing, Killeen Police Department Chief Charles F. Kimble reported that at about 6:40 AM, police received a call about a "subject in mental distress". As they began to investigate, officers learned it had escalated into a shots fired call.

Officers responded to the area of 600 West Hallmark Street to investigate and realized that they were dealing with what Kimble called "a fluid, escalating situation".

One caller reported that a man was firing at random, and that kids at a nearby bus stop might be in danger. According to Kimble, KPD coordinated efforts with the Killeen Independent School District and no students were in danger.

"No children were injured," Kimble said. "We don't believe any KISD buses or property were injured."

"During the course of the investigation," Kimble continued, "We are now looking for a subject named Nathan Eric Nance. He's a 43-year-old black male."

Kimble said Nance was last seen in the 500 block of Wolf Street just off Hallmark wearing a black and white checkerboard shirt and black shorts.. Police were conducting door-to-door searches in the area Thursday morning.

Kimble said Nance is armed and mentally unstable, and that he did fire shots.

As of the time Chief Kimble spoke to the public (shortly after 9 AM), no injuries had been reported.

We will bring you more information as it becomes available.
