I remember living on 2nd ave in Minot N.D. when my parents went to the movies. I pretty much lived in the basement with our "Rec" room and pool room. I had a few friends sleeping over and we were playing pool and ping pong non stop.

The folks got home and were disappointed. That usually happened when it was my Mom's turn to pick the movie. This time they went to Saturday Night Fever. I don't know what she was expecting, but she didn't get it. When I asked how the movie was she just stammered and said the music was good.

Later, when it came on the HBO and I got to watch it, I pretty much new that it was the rape scene that put mom over the edge. Violence to women is not something that was tolerated in my family.

Not many people liked the movie as much as they liked the music. And they were buying it. On this day in 1979 the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever reached album sales of 25 million. Making it the biggest selling LP at the time.

Even though the movie was violent and ridiculous with plenty of bad acting, the music was sweeping the world.
