I don't know about you, but I've got a ratty, worn-out tire that's been sitting behind my storage shed for a while now. I keep saying I'll "do something" with it, but I know I won't and it's time to get rid of it.

If you're in the same boat and you're a resident of Killeen, you can dispose of old tires responsibly this weekend out at the Special Events Center, 3301 S. WS Young Drive.

The City of Killeen will be hosting a free tire recycling event on Saturday, September 12 from 9 AM to 1 PM. Roll in with four car or light truck tires up to 22 inches, and be sure to bring proof of residency with you.

Sorry, but they say no over-sized or tractor tires will be accepted at this weekend's event, nor will tires from private businesses.

If you miss the recycling event but you still want to do the right thing with your old tires, you can always take them to the Killeen Transfer Station, 12200 State Highway 195. They'll take those tires off your hands for a fee and make sure they're recycled or put to good use.

Transfer station hours are:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 8 AM to 5 PM

Wednesday, Saturday: 8 AM to 3 PM

If you're like me and live in Temple, wait about another month. The City of Temple usually hosts a hazardous household waste disposal event at which they'll take old tires, chemicals, and batteries off your hands to make sure they stay out of our ditches and water supply.

Now, if only someone could help me get rid of the spare tire under my favorite t-shirt that doesn't fit right anymore.
