KXAN is reporting a new fish pond is being set up to protect the San Marcos River.

In order to keep people from dumping unwanted pet fish into the river, conservationists are asking Texans to bring unwanted fish to the San Marcos Discovery Center's Fish Pond instead.

Goldfish, Beta fish, and algae eaters have already been brought to the discovery pond in an effort to keep non-native fish out of the river. The center is able to find new homes for the unwanted fish if they are dropped off at the center. This prevents non-native fish from hurting the habitat.

If you have a fish that you can't continue to care for, please bring it to the Discovery Center at 430 Riverside Drive.
