Kansas coach Charlie Weis announced at his weekly press conference on Tuesday that redshirt freshman quarterback  Michael Cummings from Killeen will start against Texas on Saturday.

Cummings started KU's 52-7 loss to Oklahoma last week while splitting time with senior quarterback Dayne Crist.

"We'll see how it goes," Weis said. "I'm not listing them as 'or' (on the depth chart). They've both been told that. They both know that Michael's starting and we'll see where it goes. But I think that, at this point, when you're 1-6 and things haven't gone real well, I think you owe it to your team to see what you got."

Weis said he was pleased with Cummings' demeanor during the OU game. Cummings finished 10-for-21 for 111 passing yards with two interceptions.

"The game wasn't too big for him down in Oklahoma," Weis said. "Now, of course, I didn't throw the playbook at him. Everyone says, 'Well, why don't you do more?' Well, I don't want to get the kid killed, either. Any time you're starting with an inexperienced quarterback, it's probably a good idea to protect him some.

"'We'll do a little bit more with him this week than we did last week, obviously. When you score seven points, that's not good enough no matter who you're playing. So you've got to give your team a chance to score more points than that."

You can listen to the game this Saturday on 101.7 The Ticket with pre-game at 10am and kickoff set for 11am.
