Jimmie Johnson won the Brickyard 400 on Sunday, tying the record for the most wins by a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Only Jeff Gordon, Johnson's Hendrick Motorsports teammate, has also won the race four times since NASCAR began competing at the famed 2.5-mile track in 1994.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., perhaps NASCAR's most popular figure who also drives for Hendrick, finished fourth and climbed into the lead of the Cup championship standings.

Earnhardt leads by 14 points over Matt Kenseth, who was involved in a late-race crash and finished 35th. It was the first time Earnhardt has held the series point lead in nearly eight years.

Kyle Busch finished second, nearly five seconds behind Johnson, and Greg Biffle was third. Gordon finished fifth.

"I'm at a loss for words," Johnson said of his four Brickyard 400 wins. "We put it on them today, it was nice."

Johnson was leading when the race had its final restart after a caution period with 20 laps left in the 160-lap race. As the green flag fell, Johnson shot ahead and never was challenged again.
