I remember getting my first and only tattoo. I was nervous and had 2 hours to waste before my session so I went across the street and hit up the bar. I hate needles, they freak me out. I really wanted my tattoo but didn't have enough courage to walk in sober. Naturally, I got all prepped up with liquid courage. I remember walking in and being so pleased with how sanitary all the equipment was. Turns out I should have been asking questions about the tattoo ink and not the equipment. Luckily for me, my tattoo healed nicely and I have been hiding it with a watch for 6 years now. I can't imagine the horror of having an infected tattoo. Unfortunately, an infected tattoo is something a lot of people need to be on high alert for. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recalled certain inks that are causing bacterial infections. Check out the list of inks to avoid below:

  1. Scalpaink SC, Scalpaink PA and Scalpaink AL basic black tattoo inks manufactured by Scalp Aesthetics (all lots)
  2. Dynamic Color - Black tattoo ink manufactured by Dynamic Color Inc (lots 12024090 and 12026090)
  3. Solid Ink-Diablo (red) tattoo ink manufactured by Color Art Inc. (dba Solid Ink) (dba Antone's Ink) (lot 10.19.18)

The FDA claims that the inks listed above could possibly cause serious injury due to bacterial contamination. Have you gotten a tattoo lately? Did you get rashes, lesions and red papules in areas where the contaminated ink has been applied? Officials say you need to go see a doctor ASAP.  Some of the tattoo infections reported have caused permanent scarring. Before you let your artist start on that tattoo make sure there are no recalled inks involved.
