A local sheriff facing charges for felony assault on a public servant, sexual assault, and misdemeanor official oppression is free on bond with the power to arrest you until 2021.

According to a report from our news partners at KWTX, Ricky Scaman will remain as Sheriff of Falls County until his successor, Democrat Joe Lopez, gets sworn-in in 2021.

It's honestly quite shocking, but Falls County commissioners are working on a suit against Scaman for failure to provide crucial audit information. By law, Scaman is required to report information on the county's jail commissary account, inmate welfare fund, inmate trust account, and equipment inventory. Without that information, commissioners remain unsure of where department money and spending is going.

With Scaman's record, it doesn't look good. Scaman was arrested on September 21, 2020 for felony assault on a public servant, sexual assault, and misdemeanor official oppression after an investigation by the Texas Rangers.

Law enforcement provided a list of 18 recommendations as bond conditions for Scaman, but District Judge Bryan Russ removed 5 of the recommendations that were listed, arguably some of the most important ones.

Thanks to Judge Russ, Scaman is allowed to keep his badge, drive police vehicles, act as an officer of the law, possess firearms, and does not have to wear an ankle monitor.

Be safe traveling through Falls County, my fellow Central Texans, because until 2021 Falls County might as well be the Wild West with Sheriff Ricky Scaman.
