A memorial honoring the 22 killed and 25 injured in the August 3, 2019 mass shooting at an El Paso shopping center was unveiled to the public Saturday.

The Associated Press reports that the "Grand Candela" or "Big Candle", a 30-foot-tall obelisk resembling a golden column of light, was revealed to the public during a ceremony in the parking lot of the Walmart store in which the shooting took place. A private ceremony for the families of the victims was held Friday evening.

KVIA-TV reports that the memorial features 22 perforated aluminum arcs dedicated to those who lost their lives. At Saturday's ceremony, El Paso Bishop Mark Seitz said the memorial should serve as a reminder of God's presence, and that its light would reach the hearts of the people of El Paso and bring healing.

The memorial stands in a garden planted in a small plaza built on the south side of the store's parking lot, KVIA reports.

El Paso Mayor Dee Margo led the ceremony's crowd in prayer in both English and Spanish, and 22 doves were released.

You can see the lit Candela in the videos above and below. It's a beautiful memorial that, in my opinion, successfully conveys a sense of warmth and comfort in the wake of a such a senseless act of hatred.
