The first 9 years of my life, the majority of the time, I lived in a tiny town called Surrey North Dakota. Being the upper Midwest, we had basements, which in turn had window wells. Those were area's around the basement window's. They were dug a few feet apart from the window so a person could escape a fire. In the summer, these area's in Surrey were a perfect place for salamanders to live in. So we would always be playing with them. It's as close as I ever got to being "outdoorsy". Snake handler Jamie Guarino takes playing with reptiles a little further.
