Copperas Cove Porch Pirate Caught on Ring Camera
Package thieves who strike in broad daylight are infuriating, but hopefully more of them are being identified after being caught on camera like this one.
The Copperas Cove Police Department is hoping someone out there will recognize a porch pirate caught on a homeowner's Ring camera back on Wednesday, October 21.
The footage shows a white woman in a purple crop top, black shorts, and flip-flops running up to the home's porch, helping herself to an envelope that had been delivered to the home, and casually walking away. She's picked up by a silver-colored SUV, the driver of which was clearly waiting for her. Gotta have a getaway driver, right?
Police didn't specify which neighborhood this was, but they're asking anyone who might recognize the woman or the vehicle, or anyone who may have seen something, to call Detective Schaefer at (254) 547-8222 Ext. 6894.
According to security.org, one in five Americans has been the victim of package theft this year. That doesn't surprise me. A steadily increasing number of people were placing orders online before the COVID-19 pandemic, and I can only imagine how many more began shopping for essentials online this year as some businesses shut down and others limited their hours and put new safety protocols in place.
Safety.com has a list of recommendations for preventing your packages being looted. Personally, I'm a fan of Amazon Lockers. When you check out on Amazon, you can choose the Amazon Locker option to have your package delivered to a secure locker, usually located outside a nearby business. Amazon sends you a combination to open your locker, and that combination is changed once you've picked up your items so the next person feels secure as well.
You can bet porch pirates will be on the prowl as more people are ordering holiday gifts, so be sure to keep track of your packages with tracking services when possible and let online sellers know if your package is stolen or compromised. Most will work with you to replace your order or refund your money.
