Classes continued as usual this past Monday, even after WISD disinfected two schools following the confirmation of a case of mumps at one school and a possible case at another.

KWTX reported that the confirmed case came from Bell's Hill Elementary School, and the possible exposure was from a University High School student.

It was just last month that the Texas Department of Health and Human Services issued an advisory with 221 confirmed cases, which was the highest number Texas had seen in 22 years.

The mumps vaccine is a requirement to get your kid in school, but parents can apply for a waiver.

Remember the tell tale signs of the mumps: A few days of fever, muscle aches, tiredness, loss of appetite, and headache, followed by swollen salivary glands. Anyone diagnosed or suspected to have the virus needs to stay home for 5 days after the salivary glands start to swell.
