We have our own dog show in studio here at K1017, and we air this feature each Friday. We only do one dog at a time because our focus is on finding homes for those dogs at the Temple Animal Shelter.

This weekend in Travis County, it was that times hundreds more.  The Heart of Texas Dog Show took over the Travis County Expo Center.  Take a gander at the video to get an idea.

Have you seen the prices of purebred dogs for sale? A bulldog puppy will cost you upwards of two grand!  These dogs are so inbred that they cannot reproduce through the natural means. They have to be artificially inseminated because of their funny shape.  Is that an optimal situation? The breed is been so modify that it cannot exist without human intervention. Ponder that for a moment.

I had a purebred dog for 15 years. Daisy was a Shetland sheepdog, the miniature collie. We didn't realize it at the time, but this is hardly a breed of dog that should exist in a warm southern climate. This dog essentially has two coats, a regular one and an undercoat.  Later in life, the summer would wreak havoc on poor Daisy with the two coats. She developed hotspots and the only relief we thought was to shave her.  In retrospect, that was not the smartest thing to do. Her undercoat never grew back the same way. What did I know, I was a teenager.

By contrast, the people who raise show dogs truly invest the time and energy needed to breed a quality animal.  Sometimes I wonder if these people are all trust fund babies with infinite amounts of time and money to make it happen.  How can they have their mind on anything else like a job or other major responsibilities?

Congrats to everyone who competed and everyone who enjoys seeing purebred dogs. A fun time was had by all. Now if you're looking for pound puppies in Temple, join us Friday morning!
