The Humane Society of Central Texas has seen an increase in available pets for adoption.

Less than a year ago, my family and I were looking to add a new member to our family. We wanted a puppy, and after checking out some online options, we found our new family member, Baylor.

Baylor is a good boy, and we're glad he is a member of our family. He gets lots of love and is always glad to see you when you walk in the door, no matter how stressful the day was for him or us.

Pets do that to us. They help put us in a good mood, and the benefits far outweigh any negatives.

According to help.org, pet owners are less likely to suffer from depression, and our pets can help us with high blood pressure, as well as help elevate serotonin and dopamine which can help calm and relax you and so much more.

So, if you can, now is a great time to look at pet adoption. The Humane Society of Central Texas has seen an increase in animals, and Executive Director Paula Rivadeneira tells , with FOX44 News why.

According to Rivadeneira, a number of people are leaving dogs and cats with the Humane Society due to financial hardships attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some have lost jobs or hours and are worried they can't afford to properly care for animals, particularly pets with special needs.

The Humane Society of Central Texas is hoping to find forever homes for all their furry friends. Rivadeneira said that in the mean time, they prefer to get the animals into foster homes so they get the specialized treatment they need and so that the shelter can get an idea of how the animals behave in a home. She also worries that the shelter will have to close again due to COVID-19, and is concerned about the shelter becoming overwhelmed.
