Food insecurity has been on the rise during the pandemic, and the Central Texas Food Bank has been doing what it can to help. Demand has been high, but they've managed to host free food distribution events thanks to the help of volunteers and donations.

Their next local event will be held at Temple College, 2600 South 1st Street in Temple, from 9 AM to 11 AM Saturday, January 16.

Volunteers will distribute an assortment of food items while supplies last. These distribution events are designed as drive-throughs, but if you walk or take a bus, they won't turn you away. However, they do ask that you bring a box or other container to hold food items and make them easier for you to carry home.

For our friends a little north up I-35, the food bank is holding another event at Waco ISD Stadium, 1401 South New Road in Waco, from 10AM to Noon Thursday, January 28. Again, you can walk up, but they ask you bring a container.

As a courtesy to volunteers, please wear a mask or other face covering to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

If you're unable to make it to these events, there are still ways you can receive assistance from the food bank. Visit centraltexasfoodbank.org and click the Find Food Now button toward the top right. You can also call (512) 282-2111.

Volunteers and donations are what make these events possible, and the Central Texas Food Bank is in need of both. If you'd like to get involved and help Central Texas families in need, you can find volunteer information here. If you want to help with a monetary donation, you can do so here.

In addition to food assistance resources, the Central Texas Food Bank offers a culinary training program, breastfeeding education, and an introductory course on organic gardening. More information on those programs can be found here.
