Your faithful companion may have a natural fur coat, but that doesn't mean they wont get cold this weekend.

You may have heard from our news partners at KWTX  that the days to come are going to be very chilly! Most people may be preparing their pipes and winterizing their vehicles, but don't forget about protecting your pets.

As a fur mom, I always wrap up my dachshund when winter weather comes to town. It's important to keep your pets safe in extreme weather, and living in Texas we experience it all. Most people may assume that putting a coat or sweater on a dog is unnecessary, but that is not true.

Here's a quick list to determine if your pup needs a coat:

  • Senior Dogs
  • Dogs that sit low to the ground
  • Miniature or toy dogs
  • Dogs with lean bodies and short hair
  • Long haired dogs that receive grooming
  • Puppies

The Humane Society is reminding pet owners to keep their pets safe and warm this weekend with the freezing temperatures approaching.

Here are 5 easy tips to remember:

  1. Keep pets sheltered
  2. Bundle up, wipe down
  3. Remove common poisons
  4. Protect outdoor animals
  5. Speak out

If the temperature drops below 50 degrees, then the Humane Society of Central Texas encourages dog owners to bring their outdoor pets inside.

Please do not assume just because your dog has a pet igloo or dog house that they're good to go! These structures need insulation to keep your pet safe and warm. The Humane Society recommends using straw inside and out of their space. Your pup will be able to burrow in to keep warm.

The Humane Society will bring you a free bale of straw if you need it. If you are unable to pick up the straw, then Straw Patrol Volunteers will deliver it to you!

Let's enjoy the wintery mix coming our way by keeping the whole family safe.
