A few years ago 25 year old Norwegian artist Alexander Selvik Wengshoel had hip replacement surgery.   Alexander was born with a defective hip and endured years in a wheelchair or on crutches.  He underwent many failed operations until finally getting this successful replacement.

As an artist Alexander wanted to immortalize this life changing surgery with an exhibit.  He spent a year convincing his doctors to let him film the operation and then keep the bone.

So in order to use the bone as part of the exhibit Alexander had to prepare it for exhibit.   While he was doing that Alexander had a question.  What does my flesh taste like?

Alex says, "I had to boil off the meat to get to the bone, and when I started scraping off the meat, I took off a little piece and I thought, 'why not do it. It's not every day I will have a piece of human flesh which is mine and which it is possible to eat', so I had a little taste, and then I thought, 'that's really nice'."

Once he decided to eat his own flesh, Alexander wanted to make an occasion out of it.

He says, "I made myself dinner while my girlfriend was at work, and I just resolved to have this really nice moment, with me and my hipbone".

He ate the meat with a side order of potato gratin and a glass of wine.

So, what did it taste like?  According to Alexander, "It had this flavour of wild sheep, if you take a sheep that goes in the mountains and eats mushrooms. It was goaty."

I am not sure I believe the guy but Alexander doesn’t care.  He says, "You can either believe it or not, that's purely up to you,"  I am not here to convince anyone and say 'yes, yes, I really did this'. The story is the story".
