If you're thinking about running for political office in Killeen or just want to learn more about how city government works, then you need to apply for the Killeen Citizens Academy Class of 2020. Oh, and you need to act quickly.

According to a press release from the City of Killeen, the Killeen Citizens Academy is a nine-week session designed to give citizens an inside look at their municipal government. Each class details a different department, function or program of municipal government. Participants will receive detailed presentations, interact with staff and elected officials, and tour various facilities.

The City of Killeen will be accepting applications for limited spots in the academy, and applications are due January 3. The 2020 academy is scheduled for January 23 through March 26. Classes are held on Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at various city facilities. There is no cost to enroll.

Be mindful that in order to be eligible to participate, citizens must be at least 18 years of age, may not be running for political office, and may not be involved in litigation with the City of Killeen. Residents of Killeen and Fort Hood will be given priority enrollment.

Graduation requirements include attendance at all sessions and at least one City Council meeting, as well as one workshop. Applications and detailed information are available online at KilleenTexas.gov/Communications.

Completed applications are due no later than January 3. Selected participants will be notified January 10.
