U2 appeared on Saturday Night Live last night (Dec. 2) to perform two tracks from their latest album Songs of Experience. Watch their rendition of “American Soul” above, and of “Get Out of Your Own Way” below.

The follow-up to Songs of Innocence was released on Dec. 1 after it was originally completed a year ago – only for the band to decide that the world around them had changed during production. Guitarist The Edge said in January that the election of U.S. President Donald Trump had been a significant consideration. “We just went, ‘Hold on a second – we’ve got to think about this record and how it relates to what’s going on in the world,’” he said. “Most of it was written in the early part of 2016, and now, as I think you’d agree, the world is a different place.”

Frontman Bono – who duetted with Coldplay counterpart Chris Martin in a TV charity special last week – said in September: “I would say the emotional temperature is up about 25 percent. There’s a couple of reasons why we delayed Songs of Experience. We nearly lost the European Union, something that has helped keep the peace in our region for nearly 70 years.” He also revealed that he’d taken the unusual step of referring to Trump directly in his lyrics, explaining: “I’ve always believed in working across the aisle as an anti-poverty activist. But this isn’t a matter of right or left. There’s a bully in the pulpit and silence is not an option.”
