Tulip Fever exists. Totally. We promise. In fact, it exists so much that its bodice-ripper of a Red Band trailer was just released today, even though the release was pushed back for a third (or is it fourth?) time earlier this week. As if to apologize, The Weinstein Company released a very sexy trailer today that you definitely don’t want to watch in your office on your lunch break.
Tulip Fever is adapted from Deborah Moggach’s 2000 novel, and stars Alicia Vikander as a merchant’s (Christoph Waltz) wife who suddenly gets the hots for the young, handsome painter (Dane DeHaan) whom Waltz has hired to paint their husband-and-wife portrait. Long story short, corsets are unlaced, bosoms heave, and the two pretty young things engage in an illicit affair that becomes harder and harder to keep a secret from Vikander’s creepy husband.
In 17th Century Amsterdam, an orphaned girl (Alicia Vikander) is forcibly married to a rich and powerful merchant (Christoph Waltz) – an unhappy “arrangement” that saves her from poverty. After her husband commissions a portrait, she begins a passionate affair with the painter (Dane DeHaan), a struggling young artist. Seeking to escape the merchant’s ever-reaching grasp, the lovers risk everything and enter the frenzied tulip bulb market, with the hope that the right bulb will make a fortune and buy their freedom.
Tulip Fever will open in theaters September 1. Maybe. We’re really not sure.
