What does Dave In The Cave and his eldest offspring do of a Saturday night? Watch the tube? Sit around and discuss her future over blintzes and a nice coffee? No, buddy. WE HIT THE DRIVE IN!

Wait...what? A drive in? It's still 2015, right? Listen, there's so many hidden treasures scattered amongst the chain restaurants and big box stores in Central Texas. And this is certainly one of them. Head down the road a bit to fabulous happening...Gatesville. Take that right in front of the Wal Mart and there it is! The Last Drive In Picture Show, and it's a keeper. My family digs it the most.

I was introduced to the Gatesville drive in around 2007 by my friend Doreen V. who took pit on a d.j. with nothing to do and took me along with her family to see, I think it was Air Force One? As always, owner Gene is out front of the entrance to their indoor theater's lobby, taking your ten bucks a car load, telling you to park close to the pole so everybody has room. Inside, the families have gathered.

Camp chairs, truck beds loaded with blankets, rear doors open, folks gotta be comfortable. I've even seen coaches and entire sets of car seats.  Food is everywhere, of course, there's even the occasional portable grill going as folks settle in for the show. In addition, there's even an indoor seating area in case the outside weather or the occasional bug is not to your liking.

Pre-show prep also includes a visit to the Snack Bar. I'm telling you, this is one of the major selling points of this place. The staff are always incredibly friendly, the selection is top notch and the prices leave the theater chain snackage in the dirt.  This:

-was eleven bucks. And refills? Just a dollar. Goodness, what decade is this again? So you've got your snack haul, time to check out the show. Two first run features for ten bucks? Cheap food? A movie under the stars? Yes! Also, the days of speakers on poles is done. A small FM transmitter feeds the sound to your car via your radio. And it's in stereo. So you can crank up the bass for that ultimate Summer Movie RUMBLE.

Uh, THE SCREEN?

On a spring/summer night, with a great movie on that screen, the stars out and around you, the occasional blinking lights of a distant plane cutting across the night sky above the screen, this place is just heaven. It even makes something like Furious Seven, a jumbled, galumphing barely makes a lick of sense stuff blows up piece of idiotic dreck, into a memorable night out, even if it just because you're watching a car racing video game passing itself as a movie, and you've actually got one of these so you can play along:

So, take the tip from Dave In The Cave and check out The Last Drive In Picture Show! You'll enjoy it, and then you will have the very Central Texas pleasure of saying to a friend new to the area, "You wanna go to the drive in tonight?" and seeing the puzzled look on their face. Then it'll be your turn to convert somebody into a Drive In Believer.
