Science is responsible for many great things. Also evil things. Really awful evil things. Things like the list I'm about to introduce to you. Brace yourself and READ ON!

Ooo, we like to think we have good taste when it comes to the art we consume, but that lizard brain is strong, and we as a public love our audio candy. Over in England, The Museum Of Science And Industry put together an online game called Hooked On Music, and over the course of a year, people played games with song clips and their reactions, retention and recognition were monitored and quantified, the results totaled up, the 1000 song clips boiled down, and, based on people's reactions, a list of the of the World's Catchiest Songs was created. Thank you, science.

Coming in at number five, it's everybody's favorite group of tuneful Swedes, ABBA, sending out a call for help. It's "S.O.S." (Just edging out Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman" at number six.)

Okay, so far, so good. I can get behind a little ABBA. Then the list of the Catchiest jumps to modern times and Lady Gaga comes through the door with her debut song, "Just Dance." Gotta agree with this. First time I heard this back in 2008, out of nowhere on satellite radio, the needle on my Hit Song Indicator went nuclear, slamming into the red, hard.

At least it wasn't "Poker Face." That came in at number eleven on the list of the catchiest songs. At number three, we're looking into the face of Survivor, and the very touching love theme from 1982's Rocky Three. It's the "Eye Of The Tiger". It's the thrill...of the fight. Rising up. To meet the challenge. Of our rival.

Which brings you and me to number two on the catchiest songs of all time, according to science. Listen, to be honest, back in the day, we would get Hit Discs of what the record companies felt would be their potential big releases for that month. And yes, when I hit the following song, I may have banged REPEAT many many times. My pop sugar tooth has no shame. It's Lou Bega. And "Mambo #5."

And here it comes. The Number One Catchiest Song, According To Science, Narrowed Down Out Of a Thousand Songs, From The 1940's to the Present. Are ready? It's...The Spice Girls.

Thank you, science. Thank you. (Find out more about the study HERE.)
