SXSW 2017 Will Close Out With Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal Sci-fi ‘Life’

SXSW 2017 has officially found its closing night film, and with the addition of the upcoming sci-fi thriller Life, this year’s Film program has a proper beginning, middle and end. The new film, starring Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson, will debut in Austin next month to formally conclude the fest (which actually keeps going for a few more days, if you have enough energy to stick around), with all three stars present for the big premiere.

This year’s SXSW Film Festival will kick off on March 10 with Terrence Malick’s Song to Song, which was filmed around the filmmaker’s hometown of Austin with Michael Fassbender, Ryan Gosling and Natalie Portman. Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver will follow on March 11, with the filmmaker and select cast members (like Jon Hamm) in attendance). Life, directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) and scripted by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Deadpool), will premiere on March 18 — unusual, since the“closing night” film typically plays the final Thursday of the fest.

Life isn’t the only major addition to the 2017 lineup. Atomic Blonde (formerly known as The Coldest City), the new spy thriller starring Charlize Theron and James McAvoy, will have its world premiere at the fest. The film is based on the graphic novel series by Antony Johnston and marks the first solo directing effort from David Leitch, who made his debut alongside Chad Stahelski on John Wick. Atomic Blonde is “a breakneck action-thriller that follows MI6’s most lethal assassin through a ticking time bomb of a city simmering with revolution and double-crossing hives of traitors,” and also stars John Goodman, Sofia Boutella and Toby Jones.

SXSW Film runs from March 10 through March 18 in Austin, Texas. We’ll be on the ground all week bringing you the latest reviews and interviews from the fest.
