State Scientists Report Zebra Mussels in Lake Austin

Apparently, the "clean, drain and dry your boat" song needs to play a little more often in the Lone Star State as scientists now say zebra mussels have spread into Lake Austin.

KWTX is reporting the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department confirmed zebra mussels were found on a barge in Lake Austin and nearby flotation devices on August 9th.

While it can't be confirmed how they got into Lake Austin, experts say it may have been via boat, or they spread downriver towards the capital from the lake itself.

Scientists discovered zebra mussels in Lake Travis back on June 22nd clinging to several boats. Clearly, the species continues to spread in central Texas.

These creatures clog water pipes, ruin boat motors, and affect other life in our Texas lakes. The spread of zebra mussels in Texas seems to go back to Lake Texoma in 2009.

In all, KWTX says we have 12 Texas lakes infested with the mussels. These include Lake Belton and Stillhouse Hollow Lake here in Bell County.
