Yes, today is a holiday to some. Be sure to wish a Happy Michaelmas to all your friends named Michael.

A holiday that forces women into the kitchen. I'm shocked that this isn't a more popular holiday.

If you know someone who is a member of the Serbian Orthodox Church, then you might have heard of Michaelmas, but odds are you might think I'm feeding you a line of bull. Would I do that to you? Okay, yes I would, but not this time. Wink Wink.

According to Wikipedia, the day is also known as the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, the Feast of Archangels, and the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels.

The traditional meal for the day includes goose. British Island folklore suggests that Michaelmas day is the last day that blackberries can be picked.

You see, rumor has it that when St. Michael expelled Lucifer from heaven, old Louis landed on a prickly blackberry bush. So if you pick blackberries after September 29th, you'll be cursed the devil. No, not really. It's just that when Satan got up, he cursed the fruit. He scorched the bushes with fiery breath, stamped, spat, and urinated on them so they'd be unfit for eating.

If you have a blackberry bush, test this theory. Pick and eat a couple today, then pick and eat a couple tomorrow. See if they taste like scorched urine. Then be sure to tell everyone how you know what scorched urine tastes like in the first place. We're not judging. Wink Wink.
