Salvation Army Opens Up Warming Centers for Homeless

News 10 is reporting that the Salvation Army announced on Monday that they will begin to open up their warming centers during the days that the high temperature does not go above 40 degrees.

The warming centers are designed to provide a relief from the cold winter temperatures for homeless people all across Central Texas. Previously, the centers would only open if the temperature was below 32 degrees however, the Salvation Army realized that temperatures slightly above 32 degrees are still hard on the homeless.

"I don't think people realize how quickly hypothermia can set in. We are asking people to come in out of the cold," said Diana Barrett of the Salvation Army.

According to the United Station Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA, "hypothermia is most likely at very cold temperatures, but it can occur even at cool temperatures (above 40°F) if a person becomes chilled from rain, sweat, or immersion in cold water."
