Chalk one up for the Army's plastic surgeons. They helped out a soldier by giving her back an ear.

KHOU11 reports that Private Shamika Burrage lost an ear in a car accident in 2016.

In a first-of-its-kind medical breakthrough for the Army, plastic surgeons at William Beaumont Army Medical Center have successfully transplanted a new ear to Private Burrage, which she grew herself.

What the surgeons did was to take cartilage from under her ribs, then place it under the skin on her forearm to allow it grow. The plan is to give blood vessels time to form so that she'll have feeling in the ear when the process is complete.

Burrage has been undergoing rehab since the accident, and is reportedly very self-conscious about her appearance since losing the ear. We hope the surgery is successful and she can get her confidence back.
