News 10 is reporting that Sunday night a local Waco church decided to put a twist on a 100-year-old tradition.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Waco held their “Lessons and Carols” service. The service takes place every year and consists of nine scripture readings, carols, and hymns.

KWTX said, "This year marked the 100th anniversary of the festival of 'Nine Lessons and Carols' being broadcast by radio from King's College in England on Christmas Eve in 1918."

St. Paul's decided to do something special for the 100th anniversary by inviting local first responders to help read the lessons.

"We decided on the 100th anniversary, why not honor the first responders,” said Rev. Raymond Joe Waldon. “They have done so much for our community. And I myself have been involved in first response for Ivan, Katrina, and Dennis, and I just have a heart for first responders."

KWTX said that among the local responders in attendance were McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara, Waco Police Chief Ryan Holt, and Baylor Chief of Police Brad Wigtil.
