Temple firefighters were called to the scene of three emergencies Friday – one of which caused major damage.

Temple Fire and Rescue and Temple Police responded to a grass fire in the 700 block of Cedar Creek Road at 8:18 AM. There, they discovered that flames were inching closer to an auto repair shop.

The scene was cleared at 10:33 AM, but not before a quarter acre of land, 150 gallons of motor oil in a bulk container, and three vehicles were destroyed. Damages totaled an estimated $7,000.

Investigators determined the fire was caused by an ember that escaped a barrel being used to burn garbage. An environmental contractor was called to oversee cleanup.

The second call came from a home in the 4000 block of Ermine Trail at 2:18 PM. A homeowner reported seeing flames in their chimney after starting a fire in their fireplace. The fire was quickly extinguished.

The third call came from the Classic Inn at 4508 South General Bruce Drive at 11:41 PM. First responders spotted smoke coming from soffit vents and evacuated the building.

Investigators determined that the fire was electrical and started in the attic. The flames were quickly extinguished, but not before causing $6,000 damage.

No injuries were reported, and the scene was cleared at 1:31 AM Saturday.
